Compulsory education, exemption from registration

  • Wat is het?

    Children that are of school age have to go to school. There is unauthorized absence when your child is not going to school without a good reason. It is possible to appeal for exemption of obligation for registration.

    Your child is allowed to go to school from the age of 4. Your child is obliged to go to school between the ages of 5 and 16 years old.

    In certain cases it is possible to receive an exemption of obligation for registration at a school:

    • Exemption based on physical or psychological reasons.
    • Exemption based on opposition to the direction of education.
    • Exemption if education is continued abroad.
    • Exemption as specified in ‘Decree on exemption compulsory education migratory population’.

    • Statement from a doctor, psychologist or pedagogue appointed by the mayor and aldermen        

    Exemption based on opposition to the direction of education:

    • Statement from the parents/carers

    Exemption if education is continued abroad:

    • Statement from school abroad

    Exemption as specified in ‘Decree on exemption compulsory education migratory population’:

    • Statement of migratory existence
